Article SummaryYou have a few options for anti-virus software. If you do not have any, you are putting the whole network at risk!
Algonquin College does not provide students with antivirus software. Algonquin college staff computers come installed with antivirus software ESET NOD32 (What is ESET Nod32 ?).
Warning! If you are connected to the Algonquin College network, you should have antivirus software installed and updated on your computer. If you do not, you are putting the entire network at risk! Also if you are found to be spreading a virus, your computer will be banned from the network until you can prove the virus has been totally removed.

Modern antivirus software also scans for trojans, malware, phishing, adware, and other malicious software. Students have a number of options available to them including do nothing, install free software, or purchase and install full antivirus software. For more information, see What is the difference between malware, a virus, a trojan, adware, spyware, and phishing?

You have some options when it comes to anti-virus software; they are listed below.

Do nothing

This is very dangerous. Not only all your documents and information are unprotected, but when you connect to the college network everyone else becomes vulnerable as well. This is not really an option. Note: If you get a virus on your system, you will not be able to access the college network until you can prove that your computer is virus free.

Download and install free antivirus software

This is the easiest option for students. There are a number of good quality free antivirus software applications out there. Some popular ones include Microsoft, AVG, and Malware Bytes. ITS Service Desk may be able to coach you when installing these applications, but ITS will not do the complete for you. All these antivirus applications include the option to upgrade to better software if you pay.

Purchase, download, and install full antivirus software

You can purchase retail antivirus software, such as Norton, Bitdefender (What is Bitdefender?) or Kaspersky from a retail computer store. You can also purchase full antivirus software from their respective companies' websites.
Caution! Before buying software, ensure you have the correct version for your computer (Windows,Apple, Linux, 32 or 64-bit, and OS version) - otherwise it will not work on your computer and you may not be able to get your money back.
The full antivirus software is the best and recommended option for the best protection. In all cases you can take other precautions as well to protect your system such as installing a firewall, securing your home network router, using strong passwords, and not clicking on suspicious files in websites or emails.
Caution! If you decide to install antivirus software that is not listed here, research it first to ensure it is legitimate. There are some antivirus applications out there that do the opposite and actually spread viruses during the installation.

Pay to have antivirus software installed

If you buy a new computer, for a fee ITS Tech service can set up your computer and install your antivirus software. If you only purchased the antivirus software, they can install that for you. For more information, see What are the prices for ITS tech services?
