Article SummaryStudents have several options for anti-virus software, without it your computer may be at risk.
Instructions
Algonquin College does not provide students with antivirus software.

Algonquin College staff computers come installed with antivirus software ESET Nod32.

Warning! When connected to the Algonquin College network, antivirus software must installed and updated on your computer. If not, you may be exposing the network to unnecessary risk. As a result, if your computer is found to be acting abnormally when connected either wired or wirelessly your computer will be blacklisted from the network until it has been proven the virus has been removed.

Modern antivirus software also scans for trojans, malware, phishing, adware, and other malicious software. Students have a number of options available to them including installing free anti-virus software, or purchase and install full anti-virus software.

You have some options when it comes to anti-virus software; they are listed below.

Do nothing

This is very risky. Not only are all your documents and information unprotected, connecting to the college network causes others to become vulnerable as well. This is not really an option. Note: If you get a virus on your system, you will not be able to access the college network until you can prove that your computer is virus free.

Download and install free antivirus software

This is the easiest option for students. There are a number of good quality free antivirus software applications available. Some popular products include Microsoft Defender, AVG, and Malware\Bytes. The ITS Service Desk may be able to provide time-limited best effort support when installing these applications. Many antivirus applications include the option to upgrade to a more complete version for a fee.

Purchase, download, and install full antivirus software

You can purchase retail antivirus software, such as Norton, Bitdefender, or Kaspersky from a retail computer store. You can also purchase full antivirus software from their respective companies' websites.
Caution! Before buying software, ensure you have the correct version for your computer (Windows,Apple, Linux, 32 or 64-bit, and OS version) - otherwise it will not work on your computer and you may not be able to get your money back.
The full antivirus software is the best and recommended option for the best protection. In all cases you can take other precautions as well to protect your system such as installing a firewall, securing your home network router, using strong passwords, and not clicking on suspicious files in websites or emails.
Caution! If you decide to install antivirus software that is not listed here, research it first to ensure it is legitimate. There are some antivirus applications out there that do the opposite and actually spread viruses during the installation.
