Office hangs when opening or saving a file - what should I do?

Article SummaryMS Office program hangs when clicking Save In or Look In from the Save or Open dialog boxes.
Before hanging or freezing, the program may display the following messages:
  • Initializing Folders
  • Initializing the root folders to display
  • Cancel

This problem may occur when the computer is connected to one or more mapped network shares that are non-existent or currently offline.

To resolve this issue, you must disconnect all network drives that are offline by following the steps below.

Note: The following steps may be slightly different on your computer depending on your version of Windows.

How to disconnect a network drive that is offline

  1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Disconnect Network Drive.
  2. In the Disconnect Network Drive dialog box, click the letter of the drive that you want to disconnect, and then click OK.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to disconnect all offline network drives.
Note: This problem should not happen when using Office 365 and OneDrive.
